The Revival of the Stellenbosch Waldorf School: A New Chapter

Stellenbosch is located in southern South Africa. The mountains are rolling and green from the wine grapes that grow there. A sea breeze is often felt and makes the summers pleasant.

Located in that rural area that brought together the most prosperous with the most impoverished members of society, the school embraces and reflects the rich diversity of its community. Today, cultural and racial diversity is still a cornerstone of its identity. The school opened its doors in 1993 in the post-apartheid period. Inspired by the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner and with a vision to consciously promote holistic development. Strongly influenced by the political climate of the time, the founders prioritized inclusivity. It was the first school in the region where all children of all racial, religious, and socio-economic backgrounds could come together to receive curative Waldorf education.

The Stellenbosch Waldorf School is an independent educational institution that focuses on children from three years old in the nursery, through kindergarten, elementary school, and high school. In their thirteenth class, they take the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams as their final school diploma, to then venture into the world. But due to administrative problems, the school has run into difficulties over the past year. And those problems have cost many students. Currently, there are only 96 students left. A number of key teachers have remained, some have left due to uncertainty. Hard work is now needed to rebuild trust and attract new students.

Therefore, they have now moved to a new location in Lynedoch (Stellenbosch). They have moved in with a "sustainability institute", an international learning center committed to sustainability and companies that want to switch. On the premises are companies that are researching modern developments such as electric cars. The school hopes to be able to practice here with physics lessons. Outdoor lessons can be given. There is also a Montessori school with which cooperation can be established. Teachers from that school can step in for certain lessons. Students and teachers already feel completely at home. In this way, the school is busy with a reconstruction. In this way, there is hope that trust will soon be restored and former students will return and new students will register. So that the school can become as big as it was.
